Basilica di Sant'Ubaldo, Gubbio, travel tourism holidays

Basilica di Sant'Ubaldo, Gubbio
The relief began to climb to honor the deceased Bishop, who had loved so much and certainly carried lit candles in the hand.
This ritual is renewed every year on 15 may, the eve of death, with the "corsa dei ceri" which ends in this basilica.
Later, In place of the Church, was built the Basilica of Sant'Ubaldo located in "top of the Hill", on one of the capitals the year 1525 date of end of construction.
Behind the church there are other constructions, a monastery, still today there are friars, for the truth a few … will be two or three.
Inside the basilica cherishes the remains of the Saint.
He is there, lying, enclosed in a glass case, it seems that he is sleeping, the Saint's body was not embalmed but is uncorrupted, at least in the parts visible.
The shrine is placed over a marble structure located at the center of the nave.
The basilica is accessed by a staircase, it passes under a large gate and there is a large cloister, very simple, there is a square. Now you have the impression of being in a mystical place, a place of contemplation, dominate the light colors of brick that give a sense of calm and serenity.
To the left of the cloister there is a door, is a secondary entrance; the front is the front door of the Church.
We come and we are in the nave
The Church has five naves divided by large columns that support arches.
The appearance of the Church is sitting above the altar there is a large dome and beneath the monument on which is placed the URN which holds the Saint's body.
Basically there are beautiful stained glass Windows that illuminate immense and colors the entire space below.
On these beautiful stained glass Windows are shown scenes of life of the Saint, the Florentine artist Mosmeier.
Now we move in the right aisle, here on the stone markers are placed the three candles, wooden, in fact the 15 may, after the race, they are placed there and there remain until the first Sunday of May.
The statues of three Saints there are, for them, let us at the centre there is the cero's Saint Ubaldo, Saint Anthony, Saint George left … that wonder, just gently brushes are to me the creeps!
We continue, let's behind an urn del Santo and under the glass roof, we are in the left nave …. to the side there is a door that leads into a room where you can buy "souvenirs" of the place.
At this point even non-believers cannot help but sit and watch the beauty of the place and breathe in the quiet and serene atmosphere that envelops us.
This site completely changes her appearance on 15 may, when the candles arrive with papermaking revelers, the cloister is overrun by tourists, from Gubbio, from singing and yells ... jumps and dances ...
The basilica is teeming with faithful acclaim, then after the Friar's blessing prior the statues of saints are placed on a wooden support and reported to shoulder in town, you can form a procession and the voices come together in a single song:
O lume of faith/Church glory,/
support every core/Saint Ubaldo. /
You that you abhorred much/any land affection/
fill our chests/d'amor above. /
His brother, Father and guide/
Master in faith,/show who does not believe/
the real life.
Glory to the father and the son/and divine love/
and we with the Protector/heaven crowns.
How to get to the basilica, there are three possibilities:
For the daring, there is a cableway. You'll have to go to St. Augustine there will come along to climb around corso Garibaldi, find large statue of Saint Ubaldo, turn left, continue to rise, then you will find signs that will lead you to the departure station.
The experience of getting into the cable car is wonderful, from the top you can enjoy a wonderful panorama, only in the last section you touch the tops of the trees and seems to go against the rock, but it is not so, be confident. On the cable car up to two people at a time, we must be quick to get on and off, because it does not stop, there are, however, operators that help and block and then reopen the security gate.
Sports Council to go on foot, on the side that gives to the town there is an unpaved road which climbs with stradoni and turns, is the path that i make with ceri papermaking shoulders ... are approximately 4 km.
Along the way there are three churches, which in Gubbio call "capelucce", you can rest and then off until the last stradone.
If you decide to head this off at the piazza della Signoria, there is the Palazzo Ducale, follow it and from there everything is a go.
For the lazy there is a paved road which climbs from the opposite side. You will need to go to Santa Lucia, follow signs for Scheggia, travel along the Gorge of the fascinating Bottaccione Gorge, then you will find the devia
